The last wave at Spanish Point

The Last Wave at Spanish Point
Oil on Canvas
18"x24"
FOR SALE
€550

This is just one of a few gems going on sale in my Spring Art Sale which I will be holding after Easter. The convenience of having an art blog and website is that you can have a preview of some of the items here. It is of course for sale, so if you like this painting and would like to purchase it I can be contacted at the email address below.

This piece is a little moody, but Spanish Point is famous as a place on the Clare Coast where Ships from the Spanish Armada were shipwrecked in 1588. Those poor souls who did make it to land only did so to be executed shortly afterwards. Today it is a happier location where many surfers flock as the waves in this part of the world make this a great surfing spot. I am very fortunate to work at this location and so drive past this beach every weekend, and it never ceases to capture my imagination with its amazing waves. I hoped to capture something of the mood of the weather in this painting and I hope you like it.

The Winkle Picker

The Winkle Picker
Oil on Canvas
50cm x 50cm
FOR SALE
€450

I thought I'd give you a little look at a painting I have here in my studio. It's the Cappa Beach Winkle picker and he is a delightful gentleman to stop and talk to. He told me he's been picking winkles since he was a boy when money was scarce, and it was just one of those things you had to do. He's never stopped since.
Without fail when the tide is low you will find his bicycle parked up and a little figure down in amongst the rocks and the seaweed, and if you stop and listen carefully you'll even be able to hear the little 'plunk..plunk...plunk' sound of the winkles as he drops them into his bucket.  I had to paint him at work and I enjoyed it so much I did his portrait as well.

Madam Butterfly..

Coloured Pencil
You're probably wondering two things...
firstly where is her left arm...and secondly how DO those shells stay on! Wonder no more...

Her arms turn into seaweed...but as for the shells...your mind will have to boggle. I like the idea of doing a few life classes. This however, was something fun straight out of the imagination which is why it isn't proportionally perfect.  Oh, the seashells weren't from my head. I had a thing for drawing seashells at the time so they were little studies to frame the image with. I'd like to do her again. What do you think?
